Nowadays, the green lifestyle is growing broadly, especially among environment lovers. The widely used eco-friendly products at our time are self-degradation ones. Thus, what are self-degradation products? This article will help you clear up queries about these products.

Current Plastic Overview

There are two types of plastic which are widespread on the market: Petroleum plastic and Bioplastic.

Petroleum Plastic

Petroleum-based Plastics

This type of plastic is derived from petroleum such as: PP, PMMA, PE, PVC, etc. Each traditional plastic is made up of a chemical unit. For instance: ethylene produces PE, propylene produces PP, and so on. These chemical units are repeated and joined together to form a long string. Millions of these strings are combined to create plastic items.

Bioplastic

Bioplastic further includes 2 types: Biodegradable and Non-biodegradable

Biodegradable Bioplastic:

These plastics can completely decompose into CO2, H2O and humus in just a few months to a few years like PLA. And they are made from renewable materials such as starch (corn, potatoes, cassava, …), sugar (sugarcane, beetroots, …).

Non-biodegradable Bioplastic:

The components of these plastics have long decay time such as PE, PS, PET, PVC, etc. But they are made from renewable materials such as starch (corn, potatoes, cassava, …), sugar (sugarcane, beetroots, …).

Self-degradation Materials Overview

Timber

Timber - a self-degradation material
Timber

This is a familiar material which is widely used in our daily  lives. We can use it to create decorative products, souvenirs, and so on. Timber is a purely natural material with full of characteristics. Moreover, it has a high regenerative aptitude if moderately and properly exploited.

Bamboo

Bamboo is considered as one of the sustainable materials. Bamboo can grow up to 1 meter a day and is 2 to 3 times stronger than steel.

Finite (Desert Sand)

Finite - a self-degradation material
Finite

This is a mixture of materials that  was developed by a group of students at Imperial College London. This material is derived from desert sand which has minimal effect on the environment. In particular, this material offers a good biodegradability. Simultaneously, after being decomposed, they can also be recycled many times.

Rice

Rice - a self-degradation material
Rice

Surely, you are not too strange with this familiar material. Especially at Southeast Asia Nations. After being pulverized, the fine rice powder can be used to create products such as toothpicks, drinking straws, spoons, etc. This material is totally eco-friendly and does not affect our ecosystems.

Mycelium

Mycelium

Mycelium is made up of hundreds of interwoven fibers produced by fungal spores. This characteristic makes them an extremely durable material when dried. In addition, the fungus has an optimal level of degradation in the natural environment.

Paper

There are various types of paper that are widely used and easily recycled. They bring plenty of benefits to our environment. Paper has natural biodegradation when combined with some bacteria or living organisms.

Lepironia Articulata

Lepironia Articulata

Lepironia Articulata is a “blessed” material for people in the Mekong Delta to develop the culture of our handicraft villages. Recently, Lepironia Articulata has also been used to make drinking straws. This is a 100% natural and  can easily biodegrade in the regular environment.

What are self-degradation products?

Self-degradation products are generated from natural materials or bioplastics which are easily decomposable in the environment. Self-degradation products include 2 types: Biodegradable products and Compostable products.

Biodegradable

Biodegradation is a process in which the material is decomposed by enzymes of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, into molecules: CO2 and H2O. To enhance the time and efficiency of enzyme reactions, it is common to add some additives that have biological actives. For instance: The normal time for biodegradation of bioplastic bags is up to 6 months. The required time for complete decomposition depends on the material, the environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and the decomposition location.

Compostable

The compostable process is where the material is decomposed to compost, CO2, and water under suitable conditions by burial process. The compostable process is typically faster than biodegradation one. Only in roughly 90 days this process can create nutritious products for soil.

The Differences Between Biodegradable and Compostable Process

Features

Biodegradation is a decomposition process by microorganisms, in which the material structure is broken down into components under the action of natural microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, etc. Compostation in turn is a process where the material can be completely decomposed in a given period of time and can create compost which is beneficial for soil.

Decomposing time

Biodegradation does not specify a time for complete decomposition. Compostation has a fixed complete decomposition time.

The products of self-degradation process

The products from the biodegradation process include CO2, water and organic biomass. Meanwhile, the outcomes from the composting process can completely decompose into CO2, water, inorganic compounds and humus that are good for soil and suitable for growing crops.

The advantages of self-degradation products

Safe For Health

The self-degradation products are produced from natural origin materials that help users reduce the risk of exposure to toxic chemicals such as BPA and phthalates.

Environmental Friendliness

The self-degradation products can completely decompose into inorganic compounds and biomass that will not affect the environment, especially marine ecosystems. The outcomes can be used to produce biological fertilizers for plants and help regenerate the greener ecosystems.

Fast decomposition time

Different from products made from traditional plastic which take more than 100 years to decompose,  self-degradation products have a very short degradation time, only about a few months to a year or a few years.

With these aforementioned advantages, self-degradation products can completely replace  plastic products which are an urgent problem.
